This book takes a new historical look at Wilma Wilson's classic book, "They Call Them Camisoles," which was published in 1940. Wilma was committed to Camarillo State Mental Hospital for 4 months for alcoholism in 1939 and wrote a book about her time there. This book includes the entire text and all sketches from the book "They Call Them Camisoles" with a new addition of over 150 photographs of the places Wilma speaks of in the hospital, taken by K.Anderberg. This book also includes references to L.A.Times articles that illustrate what Wilma has written, as well as providing a history of the hospital. "Keeper of the Keys," a book published in 1976 by a Camarillo nurse, about abuses at the hospital, is also compared and contrasted to Wilma's words throughout this book. A look into Wilma's life before going to Camarillo is explored through CA birth and census records, in addition to newspaper reports, and her sensational death is also followed through news reports in the end of this book. This book is of interest to anyone who cares about human rights, patient rights, psychiatric history, CA history, women's history, institutional history and more. It is a rare window into the inside of mental hospitals, especially Camarillo State Mental Hospital, in CA. This book includes information about the grand jury investigations which ended up indicting doctors and technicians at Camarillo Hospital in 1976, as well.

Author Kirsten Anderberg earned her MA Degree from CA State University at Northridge, with a major in History and Archiving. Her work addressing the history of CA institutions is unprecedented. She wrote and published the first book ever written about the history of MacLaren Hall, a child protection institution in Los Angeles County and her books about Camarillo State Mental Hospital have brought the discussion of these hidden isolating institutions, still in existence today, back into the spotlight.

The book was very interesting. It must have taken a long time to get all the information, and put it in date order. Wilma Carnes Wilson's account of being there for basically slave labor was funny at times because of her sarcastic comments and accounts of living there in the 1940's. Having worked in a "Convelesant" and mental hospital in the 1970's and dealing with Camarillo patients with the minds of basically 2 year olds, and reading their charts as to why they were the way they were I'm sure her accounts were very accurate!
I also enjoyed the black and white pictures of today, as they related to the time period of the book. Thank you for taking the time to write this book, I've often wondered what happened to the patients I cared for being a ward of the state. I also remember reading "sterilized" on the charts, and thought how barbaric it was. Most of the patients walked in a circle in the home, and could not carry on any kind of a coherent conversation. But the scars on their bodies told a different story.
Your book brought back alot of old memories to me, I was just 16 then.
Once I saw the article in the newspaper, I really felt I had to order it, and was not disapointed in the least. I could'nt put the book down. There are so many people that Wilma knew there, and to think that she ended up there because she was an alcoholic.

Ms. Anderberg had very good raw material here - a great book, interesting to read and important in a social context. Then she added a gratuitous and excessive number of pictures as well as an incredible number of typos along with a glaring extraction on page 123, which all together turns this book into a big pile of steaming crap. Which is not to say that I regret reading it, or that I wouldn't recommend it. Wilma's original work shines through. I would recommend keeping yourb dictionary handy (or using that function on your , as I did) because Wilma was quite a brilliant woman, in spite of her opinion of herself. And you can safely skip Ms. Anderberg's photos after the first few - they're all the same. It's a bit like looking at someone's family vacation photo's. Finally, try not to focus on the quality of the typing. The quality of the writing of the writing more than makes up for it. Ms. Anderberg, however, desperately needs to do some editing. It seems she is more focused on the quantity of books she is putting out than the quality of them. So, given these suggestions, read this book, or don't, but consider yourself forewarned.
Good informative read, of course it was based on the old 1939 book, but overall very interesting. Would be a good text book for high school psychology students.
I found this book very informative and interesting in a topic that is not easily discussed. The Author brought a subject to light that has long been in the shadows. More people should be informed about what happened in Camarillo State Hospital as it is a disgrace and should not be forgotten.
